What Is Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty or  labioplasty refers to any reconstructive or plastic surgery performed on the Labia Minora (small inner hair-less lips) or Labia Major (outer hair-covered lips) of the vagina.

At the onset of puberty your hormones change and so does your body.

The labia, like a woman's breasts, changes in size, color and length during puberty and with age.

In addition, because of genetics, some women have abnormally large or long labia.

The size of the labia may cause discomfort with ordinary activities like walking, exercise or even sexual intercourse.

Other women encounter problems with one side of the labia tissue being longer than the other (specifically the labia minora) and hygiene issues.

A labiaplasty can correct physical deformities or inconsistencies in appearance.

Who Gets Labiaplasty?

There are many different reasons women choose to have a Labiaplasty procedure.

The youngest patient I have seen benefit from a Labiaplasty or more specifically a Labia Minora reduction, was a non-sexually active 13 year old female that couldn't participate in gym class because it was too uncomfortable and painful.

And the oldest woman being a 64 year old grandmother that had not been intimate with her partner for years.

She explained that due to physical pain and the emotional embarrassment she felt because of her uneven labia, she had not been sexually involved with her husband for over 5 years.

If you answer yes to any of the following questions, then you may be a candidate for Labiaplasty:

  • Are you unhappy with the appearance of your vagina?
  • Are your labia larger than you would like them to be?
  • Is one labia longer than the other?
  • Are your labia abnormally dark?
  • Do you experience discomfort when you walk, exercise or during sex?

Basically, any healthy woman who is unhappy with the look, feel or function of her labia majora or labia minora is a candidate for Labiaplasty surgery.

How Long Does Labiaplasty Take?

Depending on the complexity of the surgery or how many procedures you are having done, Labiaplasty can be done in under 1 hour.

It can be done in-office or at an outpatient facility.  Meaning there is no need to spend an evening in the hospital.

Most women are able to return to work 4 to 6 days after a Labiaplasty procedure.

In general, you will need about 6-8 weeks to recover from the surgery.  For best results, you should refrain from sex, exercise or any heavy lifting.

How Much Does Labiaplasty Cost?

The cost of Labiaplasty will depend on which labia you are reducing.

The Labia majora reduction, minora reduction, or both?

Price will also vary depending on the instrument your doctor is using (i.e. laser or scalpel).  And also the experience the surgeon has.

The average range for Labiaplasty surgery is $2,000 - $10,000 (USD).

The latter being for a combination of procedures.

Some surgeons give you a better deal when you combine procedures (such as vaginal tightening).  Ask questions and make the choice that is best for you!

Also, make sure to ask what fees are included in the price you are quoted.
