Can a Doctor Tell If I've Had Hymenoplasty?

There are a couple of reasons women choose to have a hymenoplasty (restoring the hymen to a "virginal" state).  Reasons can range from religious pressures, cultural beliefs, a special gift to a husband and even for rape victims.

After working with a surgeon that performed hymenoplasty, it seemed quite common that the females requesting to re-attach their hymen were doing it or religious and cultural reasons.

In some countries and cultures it is required that a female be "pure" and virginal when marrying.  So much so, that the future mother-in-law takes her soon to be daughter-in-law to see a gynecologist or doctor to confirm that her hymen is in tact (a symbol of her virginity).

Because this is of vital importance to both families (the females and males), hymenoplasty surgery has become increasingly popular.  The problem or fear is that upon inspection, the doctor will be able to determine that the hymen has been artificially restored.  Not only can this evidence or false hymen be humiliating to the female and her family, it can even be deadly.  In some severe cases the female and her family can even be stoned to death.

So inevitably, a female seeking to have a hymenoplasty fears being discovered.  "Will the doctor be able to tell I had a hymenoplasty?"

It depends on the doctor doing the inspection.  Obviously a doctor that specializes or performs hymen restoration will know the difference.  Therefore, my advice is, if you choose to have hymenoplasty, return to your doctor (the one that performed it) and confirm the sutures have dissolved and there is no evidence of the surgery.

Since there is no guarantee that the doctor performing your inspection will know how a reattached hymen looks, it is always best to be safe.  Ask your surgeon and make sure you are completely healed before your inspection.
