Labiaplasty Stitches Split Open & Come Undone

After labiaplasty or a vaginal rejuvenation procedure including a labia reduction, it is not unheard of for stitches to split open prematurely.

There are several reasons that can can contribute to this happening.

One of the most common however, has to do with the experience, technique and skill of your surgeon.

Most doctors these days use dissolvable stitches, which are absorbed by the body on their own in a few weeks (generally 10-14 days).

Yet if your doctor does not properly or thoroughly stitch up the incision, there is a greater likelihood of the wound opening up even when you are following your post-op instructions.

In the entire time working in the industry, I only saw split stitches once.  And it happened on the day of the surgery after a labia reduction.

With that said, through the site, more women contact me because of this.  Hence the post.

Here are some reasons labiaplasty stitches have come undone.

Excessive movement on your part may have helped the stitches come loose.

The truth is, if you returned to work or your normal activities too soon, you may not have given yourself enough time to heal.

If your stitches have come undone or split open, contact your doctor immediately (the one that performed the labiaplasty).  Have them assess your situation.

They may or may not re-stitch you depending on how much healing has taken place when the stitches come loose.

Any reputable surgeon will want to make sure you are happy with their work.  And many doctors offer complimentary touch-ups.

However, most doctors will not do a touch up until the healing time is complete, usually 6-8 weeks.

The reasons they do not do it sooner is because the incision has already started to heal and they want to avoid causing a deformity.

Once the labial tissue has completely healed, your doctor can revise it if needed.

If your stitches have come undone, do not stress out.  Contact your doctor when you notice.

If you are not happy with what they tell you, get a second opinion from another doctor.

Take it easy to let your body heal, and allow yourself to get the best results possible.

Contact me with any questions, I am always happy to help.

Hi, I had a vagina rejuventation done on august 24. I noticed one of my stiches fall off while I was in the shower 2 days ago and now it's bleeding more than before.. Is this normal? After the surgery I notice spotting but not much as I do now.

Hi Vivian,

Usually the spotting should become less and less. It has been almost 2 weeks from your surgery, so increased bleeding does not sound normal.

From your description it is difficult to say exactly what could be causing this. Have you started your menstrual cycle by chance?

My advice would be to take it easy (do not be lifting anything heavy, etc.). And keep a watch on the flow, if it is not your period and you continue to see more blood, contact your doctor's office first thing. Just to have make sure everything is in tact and to get reassurance.

Hope this has been helpful. Please keep me informed of your progress or let me know if you have other questions.

Hi, one of my stitches hang loose and some have fall off on days 5 since after the laser vaginal rejuvenation. I noticed that the surface wound has not completely closed up and spotting is slightly more than usual. Will it heal by itself?smilies/sad.gif
...
written by Vanessa Scott, September 10, 2011
Hi Katherine,

It will heal by itself. Difficult to tell how it will heal based on your description, but spotting should lessen. Make sure you are not lifting anything heavy (more than the weight of a gallon of milk). Any strain can cause the stitches to prematurely fall off.

The use of a laser, should be beneficial during the healing process (heat of laser sealed incision and skin simultaneously). Keep area dry, clean and wear comfortable loose clothing as to not rub or or agitate the area.

If bleeding worsens, they may re-suture it, but unlikely bcuz skin has started to heal. Notify your doctor if you haven't already, just to get reassurance and so they are aware.

Let me know how it goes. smilies/smiley.gif

Hi Sayra,

If you have been bleeding excessively (and not spotting) then it would best to contact the doctor that performed your stitches ASAP. Tell your doctor exactly what you are experiencing and demand for them to see you today.

It sounds very early for stitches to have fallen off and the bleeding should be getting better, not worse.

Keep the area clean, ice as you can, but definitely have the area looked at. If it is still early enough in the healing process, get it re-stitched.

Please do not hesitate to contact me again!

Hi Sayra,

Glad to hear from you. How are you?

There should be no reason you could not have a labiaplasty. As long as there is tissue there to work with, you should be able to get help. Believe me, you are not the first woman or only woman that has needed a reconstructive procedure like this to correct or improve a deformity.

You are right, you deserve to be living a healthy, happy and normal life, without pain! WE all do. smilies/wink.gif

Just be careful and smart on how you go about finding help with such a delicate part. Trust me I have seen it all, some amazing doctors that have transformed the quality of life of a woman (for the best). And then I have seen the opposite too! smilies/cry.gif

Let me know what else I can do to help!

Best wishes!!

Hi, it's me again. Thanks a lot for your fast reply. The wound(at the perineum) that i had mentioned last time had healed. And spotting has stopped since 3 days ago. But since last night after a close moment with hubby it's bleeding again. Well we were actually too engrossed in it that his penis entered mine about 1 to 2 inches. We had stopped it when I felt pain. I was shocked to see blood on his penis. Now is only 2 more days to 3 weeks since after LVR, will the incident cause any 'damage' to my LVR's result upon healing? smilies/shocked.gif

Hello Katherine,

Nice to hear from you.

3 weeks is too soon to be attempting sex. Most docs recommend at least 4-6 weeks before resuming regular activities (running, exercise) and 6-8 weeks for sexual intercourse. If it were me, I would wait at least 8.

From what you share, the sign of blood is just letting you know it is too early to be penetrating. Not necessarily that you have ruined the results.

Give yourself more time and let your body heal.

You will be very happy you did! smilies/wink.gif

If you have other questions, let me know.

Happy healing...

Hi Sara,

Thank you your post.

Healing can be different for everyone. Usually it is recommended you resume normal activity and sexual intercourse after 6-8 weeks.

Do not be alarmed. We all can heal at different rates. Especially if you already were having some difficulties.

What type of doctor did you see? Obgyn, Plastic/Cosmetic Surgeon or a Cosmetic GYN? The surgeon's tool and technique can also impact the healing.

Listen to your body. Keep area clean. You can also look into Dermoplast Spray to help.

Please keep us posted and let me know if you have other questions!

Best wishes.

My doctor is a professor of plastic surgery and also works at the hospital with reconstructions of the genital organs. But the main surgeon to operate on transsexuals. One side is completely healed and has only little marks from the stitches. But there is one side at the bottom where there is a jack that has not healed completely healed. It does not bleed and it does not hurt. It does not look like an open wound, just that it has not healed completely out. My doctor has checked on it two times and says it will tighten and you will see that there has been a jack.
But am worried that it will never heal clearly and you will always see jack.
I should also like o travel about 2 months and am afraid it is not fully healed until then.

I worry about safe unnecessarily when people who have seen it say it is not something to worry about.

Have you been through something like this before which have since become good? And how long does the healing that has been through a small complication? Could it takes several months? Can I do something that makes it heal faster?

Thanks for your response / sara

written by Vanessa Scott, October 04, 2011
Hi Sara,

Thank you for your detailed response.

It is natural for you to want this area to heal properly and for you to want it to look right. But do not worry. The good news is that it sounds like your doctor is experienced and knows what he is doing and more importantly that he is helping reassure you.

In regards to the healing, as long as you take care of it, avoid wearing tight clothing, thongs, etc. and do not start bike riding, running, etc. it should be healed by the time you travel.

Not sure what you mean by the "jack" though. But look into Dermoplast it is a spray that you can find at the local pharmacy which will help with healing(in the states). And Mederma is another option which will help with scarring and the appearance.

Also, do you know if he offers a touch-up if you need a small revision in the future? Some docs do as long as it's within a year...

Give it time and stay in touch with your doctor.

Best wishes Sara! smilies/smiley.gif

Now I have talked to my doctor and a nurse. Probably it has become the scar that has become so and everything is already healed. You do not see that I have done an operation other than at the bottom just above the vagina as it is a nice little crack at a few centimeters. There is nothing to bother me but I'm really glad I made this because I have had physical problems too that I got rid of now. I'm not going to do something about the crack because I have more to lose than to gain. And quite frankly, so do not see it to be from an operation.

So I can live on as usual now and am so glad that everything is healed and can not have me immobile for infections and other things. But still a little bit Strammer still from the scar on the side, but that will disappear when the scar softens =)

Thank you for this website!

Hi there! You are very knowledgable, I'm impressed! I had vaginal tightening and labiaplasty four weeks ago. I was great at two weeks post op but I have been steadily getting worse. Now I'm so swollen I can barely move. Is this strange to be getting worse with time? I've been using Neosporin pain relief from the beginning which mildly helps and recently started Dermoplast which burns like crazy but also helps a tiny bit. I think I over used ice and burned myself with it. What should I do?
Thanks

Hi Nonstopmrs,

Thank you for your comment.

It is common for you to have discomfort during your healing. However it should be getting better not worse.

What type of doctor did you see?

Have you done anything different? Lifting anything heavier than 5 pounds recently? Being on your feet for extended periods of time or other activities can worsen swelling.

Intermittent ice use is fine, but leaving it on for an extended period of time can cause some degree of frostbite.

Are your stitches still in? When was the last time your doctor physically assessed the area?

Thank you for your response! I saw an OB Gyn who is on your photo page, she does this surgery quite a bit. I did a lot of research on her. Friday I went to a hair appointment that lasted 2 hours at most and I was leaning the whole time as not to irritate. Friday night and Saturday I was on the maximum painkillers I could take. It is Sunday night and I haven't taken any today (I am paranoid about narcotics). I feel better but I have only gotten up to use the bathroom only this weekend. I am still more swollen than I should be but less than the last two days. I can still see a few stitches which could be the problem? I saw my doctor September 13th. I am thinking about seeing her Tuesday but she is a flight away. I am a lot calmer than I was the other day. Do you think giong to my hair appointment will affect my outcome? When can I look at it and know my final results, good or bad?
Thanks again

Nice to hear from you Nonstopmrs and glad to know you are doing better!
smilies/grin.gif
The hair appointment certainly could have aggravated the area and contributed to your increased pain/swelling. I would highly recommend if you are not already using one, a donut cushion to avoid pressure in that area and make sitting more comfortable. No exercise, swimming, sex or strenuous activity....

If you still have stitches in the area and notice that you are not seeing improvement, it would not hurt to see your doctor just to insure that their is no infection and to remove stitches.

Good news is it sounds like you did your research and picked an experienced doctor.

Keep taking it easy, stay off your feet as much as possible, no heavy lifting, wear loose clothing, no thongs, etc.

Follow your postop instructions and take it easy. Some women (especially with tightening), see that we are healing well externally and forget about the inner work. smilies/shocked.gif

Your final results can take an average of 8-12 weeks. We are all different. So listen to your body, and you should be fine.

Please let us know how you are doing!

Best wishes.

Hey there, I know I keep asking questions, sorry! Tonight I checked everything out before bed and the swelling has gone down a lot. I saw something freaky. My left minora and majora (I had reduction of the majora too)are swollen in certain areas but nothing abnormal. But on the right side, ewww gross! The front part of my minora is it's own little island and the back part has healed into the majora!! My husband looked at it and agreed. He was more positive than me saying the strip of skin that was connecting could maybe be cut and sewn back to the little island?! Holy cow, have you ever seen this before? It is like a little web of skin not the whole labia. Also, I think I'm going to quit Neosporin. Do you think I should continue? Pain isn't bad especially with Dermaplast.
Thanks again! Your site is so interesting I wish I found it before!

Hi Nonstopmrs,
No need to apologize. That is what we are here for. smilies/cheesy.gif

Swelling going down is great news!

So you had labia minora and majora reduction along with tightening? I see...If you are using the Dermoplast, I would stop using the neosporin, only because you want that area to remain dry. Any moisture can prolong the healing.

Do not freak yourself out. It will not help...
If that area has some how merged, then your doctor should be able to correct that. But more than likely will wait until you are 100% healed. Things sound like they are coming along and are getting better.

You should still get in contact with your doctor or office nurse and tell them what you are experiencing, so they can document it. And make sure you are as detailed as you have been.

Glad the site has been helpful. Please let us know how you are doing!

hi ur such a huge help from what i read,
My problem is i had a wedge labiaplasty (by the look of it)
Im Aussie living in Asia a plastic surgeon did it. So it was done 7days ago and just now the stitches have split or come out..? i have a gaping wound on the left side thats bleeding it looks like a dog has mauled it! and the other side its had to explain but since day 2 after swelling reduced it looked like half way down it had been cut off completely and theres like a lil nobble of skin thats like a burnt stub its so odd? i didn't know what to expect after as it was a last min decision as a add on the my eye surgery STUPID me did no research, tho i do trust the Dr... But y would one side be so different from the other and the left side with big gaping tear im wondering if he can re stitch it tomorrow when i go see him cause im going to Aus to see my BF in a week and kinda didn't want him to know. I only wanted a lil change and thought it would be a simple procedure im sooooo regretting it now it looks like iv been attacked with a butchers knife by a 5 yr old! smilies/sad.gif id love some advice before i see him in 9hs if u r there? Im worried being in asia if his recommendation on what to do about this all with be the correct one specially since i have to leave in a week and wont be back here for 3 weeks to have follow up...

Hi Jocelyn,

Thank you for sharing your experience. I know it can be alarming to see the immediate results of the surgery. Regardless of how experienced your surgeon was. However, the part that is concerning, is the open tear.

Good thing is that you are seeing your doctor tomorrow. He may be able to suture it up if it has not started to heal. Depending on how experienced your doctor was with these procedures, will determine what he does.

Do you know if he how often or many times he had performed labiaplasty? Who is the doctor? Maybe I know him or of him...

If the doctor did not have much experience with this surgery or the technique he used, this is what could have caused the difference in appearance of the labia.

Either way, keep in mind that it takes at least 1 month for the area to start looking "normal" or healed. As long as bleeding subsides or continues to decrease, then you should be fine until your follow-up. Ask him if you do need a touch up, is that fee extra? Find out at that point his level of experience with this surgery...

Do not worry about your BF. I mean, you are still going to be swollen or have stitches present. You can either tell him you had a gynecological procedure and CANNOT have sex for up to 6-8 weeks. *DON'T even try.* You risk opening that wound further. Or if you want, tell him the truth...up to you. More important is your health and safety. smilies/wink.gif

Keep the area clean, avoid heavy lifting, exercise, baths, thongs, etc. for 4-6 weeks.

Let me know how it goes and what other questions you have.

Best wishes!!

Hi thanks for ur kind words so glad i found this site! Are u in USA?
Its so hard to get simple answers sometime specially when in a foreign country where things are not quite what u are used to.
So the Dr asked if the stitches looked like they'd come out? I told him i never seen any stitches even looking with a mirror lol. So he checked it out and as i guessed the left side had torn all the way to base (thats the one looking like its been mauled!) the R side i questioned if he had cut the bottom half off?

Once on operating table again he showed me with a mirror that the lower portion of R side was just smaller (that was how i naturally started out) so it was there just tiny and hidden in the rest of the mess. So after his exam he found that the smaller R side had a small tear also. The nob like skin i referred to he says was a stitch...? Hmmm im not convinced unless stitches look like a burnt nob-stub of labia skin.. haha. i think it maybe wasn't stitched to meet in the middle evenly so it perhaps tried to heal with the slight overhang nobble. ?
I was dosed up on Valium & mersyndol forte (self medicated) at this stage so just wanted to get it fixed and out.

He suggested since the 7day dissolvable stitches he had used were unsuccessful that we use 90 day dissolvable stitches...? (is this good?)
I told him i don't care if i look like a patch work quilt made by a 5 yr old just sew the crap out of it so it doesn't split again as i leave for Aus in 5 days. He said after about 2 weeks if healed together he could remove them. As i wont be back to Asia before the Dec 5th i do want them out asap so he said a gynaecologist or someone? in Aus could remove them, (true?) do u know anyone you would recommend in Gold Coast QLD Aus? I want them out rather than wait because of swimming, i know i wont be getting any action for 4-6 weeks so probably will have to tell the bf. Unless i come up with some rare period that lasts 3-4 weeks haha.
Anyway he used a local anaesthetic (ouch) and it took about 45 mins to stitch me back up with visible white mutable stitches (not pretty) it was very difficult doing it conscious as last time i has twilight sedation. I left and within 1-2 hours the pain was horrible far worse than the 1st time, the 1st time i could of managed without pain med. This was bad and i felt quite sick nauseous and fever. I took my meds and slept it off. Today i feel better just still sore there, but i can tolerate with pain med and little to no movement.
Im wondering do i need to try keep the area dry as possible ? Im showering once a day and when i go to the toilet i pour antibacterial ph care wash mixed with fresh water over and gentle pat dry, but should i really try to dry between each like flap section with cotton or something to reduce the chance of stitches ripping through the skin due to moisture? I just want to do everything possible to reduce the chance or it tearing again.

Thanks so much Vanessa smilies/smiley.gif

Thanks for the update Jocelyn!
Yes, I am in the states. So I know how you can feel being in a "foreign" land...

Glad you saw the doctor and that you got the area looked at.

Were you bleeding prior to him re-stitching the area? Also, what type of labiaplasty did you have done? Wedge or trim?

My concern is his experience with these procedures. The good thing though is he is a Plastic Surgeon, but I do not know him personally or the extent of his training.

I would certainly be doing my best to keep the area clean and DRY. This will help with infection. And yes, the moisture can prolong healing of your labiaplasty incision. Did he provide you post-op instructions?

Be looking out for increased redness, swelling, discomfort and fever. Also, avoid baths for now, no swimming, tight clothing, thongs, tampons and exercise for 4-6 weeks and of course sex 6-8 weeks. This may sound extreme, but trust me, you rather be safe then sorry. Expect swelling to be present for 4 weeks.

Some docs advise you to not look down there for a while. But in your case, I would make sure everything is okay first. I know a doc in Sydney you can reach out to. If you like I can email him and see if he might be able to see you or help. Just let me know.

I personally would not be drinking just yet, simply because alcohol can not only make your antibiotics ineffective, but it is also a blood thinner. smilies/sad.gif

In regards to your last question, look into getting yourself a donut cushion to sit on. It will help will alleviating the pressure you feel and make sitting more comfortable. You can find them at a pharmacy (not sure of your options there) or online. Definitely a good and minor investment.

Please keep me posted. Take care of yourself and things will get better! smilies/kiss.gif

Hi Vanessa,
Thanks again for ur reply!
Yet again im in trouble!!!
To answer your questions , I was bleeding prior to re stiching the area after cooking dinner one night it bleed out like a period (but was not my period). I was suspicious of how it was looking down there but thought its must be normal now i realist was in the process of tearing! He did a wedge cut.
He gave no after care other than medicine advice and to keep clean.

NOW LESS THAN A WEEK LATER! The same thing AGAIN! i notice the L side had a lil gap-tear say 5mm at the edge /end where it had been sewn together.
now after being so careful all week and today especially iv noticed a hole as well as the 5mm (now 8-10mm) tear at the edge. So as in its got a tiny bit of skin or maybe a stitch holding a lil bit together the rest is coming apart just as it did before the major split last time!!!! I only just seen this HOLE now b4 going to bed!
I already txt the dr to go see him tomorrow about the 5mm tear i found in the morning, but its gone beyond that now!
I just cancelled my flight out of asia back to Aus for this tue 15th due to this and im lost for what to do?
Should i go to another dr? I just want it to heal and im not sure y its so difficult for the skin to join.?
Im normally a fast healer, & am healthy late 20's! My body has no allergic reactions and has never rejected foreign objects before & not prone to infections.
Should i even just get to a Aussie Dr? (tho that stands against what i believe about the equal treatment here) Or maybe go to another plastic surgeon here? My Dr is of no charge to me but is he even doing the correct treatments from the sounds of what i say in all my msg's? smilies/sad.gif

PLEASE HELP ME VANESSA! NOW I JUST WANT MY OLD LABIA BACK!

Hi Jocelyn,

Right now your incision is very new, so the way the area looks can alarm anyone. Just know that worrying yourself will not help.

Let's take it one step at a time.

Though your doctor is trying to make things better, you are correct that his lack of experience may not be helping. My advice would be to see him as scheduled, ask him about his experience with stitches opening or the gap that you are describing. But at this point you are probably better off seeing another doc. The gaps you describe are quite common with the wedge labiaplasty. Especially when the woman returns to normal activity too soon or the doctor did not stitch the area correctly. smilies/sad.gif

Depending on what it currently looks like, an experienced surgeon may say to wait until the area has healed BEFORE a revision. If you decide to see another doc in the area, you definitely should see one that knows what they are doing.

You can contact the Aussie doc to get a second opinion. You can email him first to share with him what you are experiencing, send him pics first to show him and see what he could do for you (and when).

Please keep me posted!

Is there other option to stitches?

So iv been to see Dr he says he need to re stitch AGAin! i asked wont it just happen again? He says "maybe" ? He wants me to go in tomorrow lunch time. He did offer to let it heal then re stitch later but also said then theres less skin to work with later as the scar tissue will only tighten the skin and cause more strain on the stitched area later. I asked if theres another way other as added support on the stitches to make it stay together better? like skin glue over the stitches? or steristrips? just anything!?

I have now talked to my mum about this and i wondered if i might be able to get the ph number & email of the gyno surgeon in Sydney u mentioned ? So perhaps my mum can call ask his advice before i go in for my 3rd re stiching tomorrow. i can also send him pictures maybe to see what im dealing with.
If he wouldn't mind?
Thanks so much Vanessa
Hope to hear from u soon

Hi Jocelyn,

Glad you spoke to your mother and are looking to see another doc for a second opinion. I personally think it is too much for it to keep undoing (3 times??). Besides it sounds like restitching it is only aggravating the incision at this point...

Contact him and see what he suggests or if he can help. At least this way you have contacted another doctor instead of just doing the same thing over and over with your current surgeon.

Please let me know how it goes. Best wishes!!!

Hi Vanessa bad news again smilies/sad.gif
i did have my mum contact Dr Les but was to late and i was on the table for the 3rd re stiching. he took off half of the left side that was the worst at splitting so theres almost nothing there, now very uneven to the right side. That was 5days ago and has split on the left again and i see a small opening in the crease between what would be the labia minor and labia major, looks maybe deep... smilies/sad.gif Im on a flight to Aus in 14hs so i just asked Dr Les to refer me to someone in my area. GOD HELP ME NOW smilies/sad.gif
ANy tips what i should be applying to this open wound for my long flight and thats available in the Philippines? lol This Dr has just had me putting betadine each time i go to the toilet and rinsing it of right after. thats it... Jocelyn, SOOOO sorry to hear that this has been such a nightmare for you! smilies/cry.gif

Why did this doc operate on you again?? Was that him trying to stop the bleeding? Does he not have a cautery available to seal the bleeding or something?

Glad your mom reached out to Dr.Les...

Think you might be able to order Dermoplast online. Also definitely get yourself a donut cushion for the flight. That should help with the discomfort of the long flight.

Neosporin available in the Philippines?

Good luck with the new doc! Please let me know how it goes!!

This is the 3rd time I ma having to have my stitches put back in via the wedge method. Any information why they are not holding?
...
written by Vanessa Scott, December 02, 2011
Hi Kasey, thank you for your question. Though this is unusual, there are several things to consider when it comes to what you describe...

First, how long ago did you have the labioplasty?

Secondly, how experienced was your doctor with this technique? Although I know of women personally that have had awesome results with the wedge labioplasty, your doctor's experience has a lot to do with it.

What reasons has your doctor mentioned for your sutures coming undone this number of times?
Obviously if you are running, lifting heavy objects/children, strenuous activity, etc. then you could be causing the sutures to split, but if you are caring for yourself appropriately, then there is something else going on.

If you would provide some more detail to give a better understanding of what could be happening and more importantly, what you could do to prevent a 4th procedure.

Please let me know.

Libiaplasty was done about 8 weeks ago, general anthesia in a woman's hospital. Two weeks ago I had to have just one side restiched, via office visit and a local. They are still not holding, so I go back the 9th and she will then tell me what to do at that time. Any suggestions?

It seems odd that the stitches are not holding 6-8 weeks post surgery. How did things look during the first six weeks? How is that other side holding up?

What changed after the first 6 weeks? Did you start exercise or your level of activity change? Did you resume sex?

Now although it is tough to say what exactly could be causing this with the amount of info provided, it could be at this point the skin has healed, but not healed together to close where the wedge was removed. Does this look like the case?

Let me know your doctor's name. I would like to see how experienced she is with these procedures. Do you know how often her patients experience this?

Hear from you soon.

Hi Tanyi,

Thank you for contacting me. Your post helps others that might be in your same shoes.

Do not alarm yourself, your questions and concerns are quite common.

In regards to your first question, constipation. This happens because of the pain meds and anesthesia. Do not strain or force anything. Not only can it be painful and uncomfortable, you just want to be careful not to split any stitches. Then you will experience unnecessary labia pain.

Here is some info on foods that you can stay away from that will not help, and then some that will ease things along. http://vaginal-surgery.info/bl...lasty.html I know of women that have also used stool softener during recovery to help with the constipation.

Normally docs tell their patients to wait a day or two before showering. Just don't rub the area too hard. Some advise no baths for up to 4-6 weeks (to avoid infection). A really great antiseptic to help with keeping area clean and even with the pain is Dermoplast. It's a spray, so you don't have to "rub" it on.

As far as your period goes, just make sure you keep the area as clean as possible. No tampons...

Don't stress yourself out, follow post-op instructions and minimize your mobility as much as possible these first 2-4 weeks. After a labiaplasty, you will notice clothing you wear, activity, standing too long, etc. will affect the swelling. So just be aware of that.

Let me know if you have other questions!

Best wishes.

Hi, I think this site is very helpful and quick responses. I had my labiaplasty a week ago, I can see the stitches at the bottom and top of my labia. I don't know how long I have to wait for these to dissolve and I'm not sure if these would coz I can clearly see them hanging out at the ends. I'm also experiencing pains sitting down, I can't go to college in this state but I will be behind with work what shall I do?
Final query, the whole area has a very horrible odour I do wash it every time I go to the toilet but the odour is still there. What could this be and what shall I do??

Many thanks

Hi Angela,

Glad the information and the site has been helpful. By you asking your questions you are also doing your part in helping other women looking for answers. So thank you for speaking up. smilies/wink.gif

Depending on the type of stitches your doctor used will determine when stitches will dissolve. Usually doctors use multiple layers of stitches for a trim labiaplasty. If your doc used dissolvable stitches, they should start to dissolve in 10-14 days. Do not be alarmed if you still see stitches beyond that point.

If you are unsure what type of stitches you have, ask your doc. If they are not dissolvable, your doc will need to remove them.

Pain will sitting is common after vaginal surgery in general. So after a labioplasty is no different. If you can, look into getting a donut cushion to sit on. This is very helpful for pain, but also great to minimize pressure/swelling in the area. So that you can sit on less comfortable chairs for your classes.

In regards to the odor, it can either be part of the healing process, the stitches, the antiseptic your doc used or even an indication of yeast infection (which can be common if you are on antibiotics). However, if you have no other signs of infection (itching, increased redness, discharge), then just be sure to keep the area clean and as dry as possible. If you notice things are not getting better, definitely contact your doc and see what he tells you.

A great antiseptic and cleanser that docs recommend to their patients after surgery and hospitals use, is called Hibiclens. You can look into it, if you are wanting an added cleanser. http://amzn.to/sCybpF Just check out ingredients and make sure you are not allergic to any.

Please let me know if you have other questions.

Best wishes,

Vanessa

Hi Vanessasmilies/smiley.gif
I have had labiaplasty last week through NHS. I was fine for two days everything looked very good and in good shape but on the third day I noticed my left labia has become bigger and swollen, there is also a crack in between but I can see the stitch which I don't understand if it has healed or something else has happened. The places where I have stitches hurt a lot and I can't walk or sit properly. I have been sitting or laying in bed most of the time. I'm also taking painkillers so far I have had 18 tablets. Im not sure when I would heal. My main concern is the symmetry not been right, will this change or remain like this forever? I have become very depressed looking at it and seeing one side bigger than the other. Can you please help let me know?
I will be going to dr in GP next week but by that time I will be very worried I really need advice I don't know who to ask, I hope to get advice from u.

Kind regards

Hi Sarah,

Thanks for sharing what you are experiencing.

What you have shared sounds very common. Most women tend to see the swelling and experience more pain right around 3-4 days.

Right now, it would be best to continue to minimize movement, keep area clean, rest as much as possible. ICE should be very helpful and encourage it intermittently. IF you leave it on for too long, you can cause some frostbite. smilies/shocked.gif

It is good that you are seeing your doctor next week. Do not worry yourself about symmetry just yet. It is very early in the recovery. The most swelling will be present for the first 4-6 weeks. So it will distort what your results are right now.

What you have described sounds very common at your stage of recovery. IF things get progressively worse, or you notice a fever then there could be an infection. So just be aware of that. With that said, keep an eye on it, but do not stress yourself out.

If you don't already have one, a donut cushion and some Dermoplast spray will also come in handy for the discomfort. You can probably find them at a local pharmacy.

Please let me know how you are doing or if you have other questions.

Best wishes!!!

Vanessa

Im comparing it to the left side labia which now looks to be healing well n in shape. I haven't been bleeding but I have too much pain on the right side. I had the trim method which has taken all of the labia off. The reason I think stitches have come off from right side is because following the surgery when I got of true bed to get dressed I had too much bleeding on the right side which went through my clothes.
Now that I'm looking at it the shape is deformed and looks split from the middle and no hEaling has taken place. I still have pain on this side,

Okay. Thanks. Have you talked with your doc?

At this point if a stitch has popped open after the labioplasty, there are several things to consider...

If your doc was skilled (which at this point I do not know), he will have layered your sutures. Meaning there are inner sutures too not just the external ones you see. So even if the sutures came undone after your labioplasty, the internal ones will keep the tissue together and keep it from staying open.

If this has happened it should still heal, but may not heal the same as the other side with all sutures in tact. Not trying to alarm you or suggest this is even the case, just sharing what may happen.

What is great is that you are not bleeding...in the mean time, keep icing the area, wear comfortable clothing, rest as much as possible, do not lift anything heavier than a gallon of milk, avoid baths, keep labiaplasty area clean, etc. Once your doctor sees you, find out the details of your surgery, how many layers of sutures did he use??

Please keep me posted.

Best wishes,

Vanessa

Hi Aly,

Thank you for your comment and questions.

What you have described is quite normal.

Some doctors advise 6-8 weeks before you resume sexual intercourse after Vaginal Reconstruction. And although everyone heals differently, it can take 3-6 months for you to be "100%". That is not to say it will take you that long, but do not be alarmed at this stage.

Hope that helps! Please let me know if you have other questions.

Hi Dao,

Thank you for your question and doing your research.

How are you doing?

Have you reached out to your doctor?

Some spotting/bleeding is common because of the nature of the procedure. Though what you describe does not sound abnormal, it would not hurt for your doctor to be notified, just for medical documentation.

Hope that has been helpful.

Hi I have a question more about labia stitch recovery after childbirth. I had my second child on Jan. 16th. the resident that stitched me up said she had to put one stitch on my labia. I thought i was healing fine but the other day i felt something funny and took out a mirror. when i looked down there and spread the labia, i saw the thread from the stitch hanging out on my inner right labia. shouldn't it have dissolved by now? i'm 4.5 weeks postpartum. it must be hard to keep the area dry so i dont know if it's infected? i go to the doctor next week for a check up. i tried pulling on it but it won't budge. do you think its just still working its way out or will they have to remove it? (which im terrified of the pain if they do have to remove it based on how it felt when i pulled) i should probably just leave it alone for now right? thanks for any help!
...
written by Vanessa, February 14, 2012
Hello Lauren,

Congratulations on your successful delivery!

If your doctor did not use dissolvable sutures, that could be why the stitch is still there. Even dissolvable stitches do not always dissolve right at 10-14 days. Unless you see signs of infection (increased pain, redness, fever, etc.), do not stress.

For now, leave it alone and wait to see your doc. When you do see her and everything has healed, they will probably remove it.

Let me know if you have other questions.

Best,

Hi Tamara,

Thank you for your comment.

Though you may feel "stupid" or believe that you are the only one that has done this, we appreciate you sharing. Not only does it enable you to get answers, it also helps other women with similar questions.

With that said, glad to hear that you are healing well. As you know 12 cigarettes a day is certainly not the best thing to be doing post operatively. Not only does the nicotine increase complications, prolong healing, affect blood clotting, the lack of oxygen in blood can impact how your tissue heals (scars etc.).

Recently had a patient contact me that had vaginal tightening done several years ago and wanted to have it done again, because she said it seemed that the results only lasted a few months. She was a smoker.

So though there may not be hard scientific data to prove or disprove the direct relationship smoking has on vaginal rejuvenation specifically, the truth is in general non-smokers heal better and have longer lasting results than smokers.

In the end, we all heal differently. Just keep in mind that you have invested in your body financially, physically and emotionally by having these procedures. You will have a direct impact on the results with your choices during recovery.

If you can stop smoking during this critical time, it will inevitably only be for your best.

Let me know if you have other questions.

Best wishes,

Vanessa

I've been reading all the comments, and it's really helping me to keep my composure; even though, some of the "english" on here has been hard to interpret. I had Labiaplasty done on Feb 9 with Dr. Hailparn in San Antonio. She seems very experienced; however, I am 99.9 % certain that my stitches have ripped on my right side. I'm not sure what this "wedge" talk is all about... I assume that is a "V" cut? That is what I had done. I noticed some bleeding and some mucus-like goop, looked in a mirror, and sure enough, there's a gaping, bleeding gash. I tried to call my doctor on her cell phone TEN times, but she did not answer. I was really freaking out that I was going to have to go to the ER, but I guess I'm safe until tomorrow morning... I'm just upset b/c I'm in Austin which is over an hour away, and I'm going to have to miss this class that I paid a lot of money to attend.

I'm not really sure why it ripped. I have not taken any baths, only showers. I clean it every single time I go to the bathroom with the water squirt bottle and Dermoplast. I started using A&D ointment b/c it was itching like CRAZY. I literally laid in bed for the first 5 days, only to get up to use the restroom. I have not been exercising, no sexual activity, no swimming. The only activity is walking, and the most strenuous thing I've done is squeeze and piping bag full of royal icing. I'm scared that she's going to tell me I cant resume my classes the day after tomorrow-- I paid over $3,000 for them. She said before I had the surgery that I should've been ok to take them (Or I wouldn't have scheduled the surgery until after!). ::sigh::

I'm usually a very fast healer, but my luck ALWAYS sucks... this WOULD be my luck.

I noticed the last few days (before the rip), that the healing crease on the right side was getting sort of ivory colored, looked like cream cheese (ew), and was hurting pretty bad. I started putting the A&D ointment on it, but maybe that's what I did wrong? I thought I was helping to heal any infection that may have been growing... Was I making it worse? The ladies at the doctor's office said I could use it b/c I was itching so badly. I also tried taking Benedryl.

Any further advice/info is greatly appreciated. I'm still very upset the doctor didn't answer her cell phone when she assured me that I could call day or night, in case of emergency.

My doctor finally called me back at 1 am-- which is totally fine since I've been up worrying, anyway. She said that it was ok. She said that she wouldn't typically stitch it back since it had been so many days (13). She said it would heal on its own?

I sent her a picture of it, and she said it was ok-- despite the fact that it looks like someone cut me open and hollowed me out, and it's bleeding. She said that keeping my legs closed would make it close shut and heal together on it's own.

She offers the free revision within the year, so I suppose I would resort to that if need be. It hurts like a mo fo, though, unless I'm lying perfectly still-- THAT'S lame.

Hopefully by morning the pain subsides and the bleeding has stopped. I guess I'm back to using the donut -__-

She said that using the A&D ointment was fine (as well as the dermoplast). She suggested the idea that the pads I had been wearing might'be been to big and irritated it? They're very thin, but they are large (Always Infinity). I was using them b/c I was still getting some sort of oozing. I suppose I will downgrade to using panty liners, exclusively.

What do you think? Any other suggestions? Does this sound right?

Thank you

Hi Jeanette,

Thank you for sharing in detail what is taking place & happy your doc got back to you already.

Before reading that the A&D ointment was okayed by the doc, I was thinking that it had possibly made things worse (by softening the healing tissue), but glad that was not the case.

With that said, at this point wear loose clothing (& cotton granny panties) as to not rub the area. Think pantyliners are a good idea (Cotton vs. plastic lined, maybe Carefree?).

It is good you spoke with your doctor and you have an idea of what is goin on.

I personally would try my best to avoid ANYTHING rubbing against the area. 10-14 days is when you "typically" start losing sutures because skin is healing. Don't stress yourself out though.

It is common for you (this far along), not to get new stitches. Just because skin has started to heal. Most experienced surgeons will wait. So IF you need any revision, the good thing is your doc does provide it (not that you want or even need one, but still).

Women LOVE Dermoplast, but just be careful not to over-dry the area, that could contribute to the skin opening too.

At this point keep caring for the area, but do NOT obsess over it. Keep area clean, avoid baths, rubbing it, scratching it, rubbing, sex, etc. Also avoid foods that can constipate you (meat, enriched flour, cheese etc.). You're in Austin so that should be easy.

Please let us know how you're doing!

Hi Leann,

Thank you for your post.

What type of doctor did the procedure? Was it a regular gyn or cosmetic trained?

At six weeks most doctors may tell you to wait up to 3 months for the healing to be 100% complete and any remaining swelling gone, before a revision. This way they also know exactly what you are needing (if anything at all).

If you still would like to meet or contact surgeons in the area for opinions or suggestions, email me and tell me where you're located. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Right now it is still very early. And though you may not be ecstatic with the current results, don't beat yourself up or stress over it. Give your body time to finish healing, if you need a revision, there are great surgeons that may be able to help.

Let me know what other questions you have.

So remind yourself, you are still healing. It may not improve to the level you want (& maybe it will). Once that is 100% complete, you will know what you are working with.

I will send you the information you requested and please do not hesitate to contact me again or to let us know how you are doing!!

Hi Lina,

Thanks for contacting me.

When it comes to healing, everyone is different, so there is no "normal". But swelling can last (depending on patient, doctor, post-op care) up to 3 months.

Did you have a wedge labiaplasty or trim?

If you have not been icing, icing the area intermittently (don't leave ice for longer than 10-15 mins at a time) will help with swelling. You may also look into Dermoplast or an antiseptic spray to help with healing, itching & pain.

I would contact your doctor of the discharge if it is not normal for you to have it. To make sure it is not an infection/yeast or other.

And I would not use tampons during your period. That is just something women have had to learn the hard way, it is not a great idea...

Happy Healing,

Do you recall how the stitch fell off on day 4? It seems early for the stitch to fall that soon after wedge labiaplasty.

What are you "cleaning" the area with? Have you described to your doctor the "whitish" part or sent her pics? This may just be your skin drying up and healing. However it would definitely be nice to let her know just for your peace of mind.

Don't stress yourself out. You are staying in communication with your doc. IF she truly as experienced like you said, she should know what she is talking about.

If you are noticing things (pain, swelling, redness, fever) are getting worse, then you may have an issue.

It is odd she did not mention ice. If you keep doing your research most experienced surgeons recommend ice and not just for labiaplasty.

Either way, keep the area clean and dry. Rest and do not obsess over it. It will continue to improve day by day.

Keep us posted and let us know how you are doing.

Best wishes,

Vanessa

Hi can anyone advice me on bleeding post wedge labiaplasty. I had this procedure last Wednesday ( 5 days ago) and although swelling is slowly resolving abd pain not too bad now I have been bleeding from site of stitches.
My procedure was done in hospital and I have stayed in bed resting other than to use the bathroom however the bleeding has persisted - is this usual ? Do I need to see the Dr ? I have an appoint to see his nurse in two days but not the Dr for another 10 days. I am starting to get concerned that the bleeding won't stop.
Any advice would be of great help to me.
Thanks

Hi Sara,

Thanks for your questions.

Glad that things seem to be improving and that you are noticing the swelling/pain subsiding.

Some bleeding/spotting is normal. However, it just depends on how much you are seeing. If you have not contacted your doc, you should. Just to give you peace of mind.

Did your doctor's office provide you post-op instructions and vitamins/medications/supplements to stay away from? Some can be blood thinners and affect the healing/bleeding. Smoking does too smilies/cry.gif

At this point, don't stress yourself out. Take a look at what you can do to change things (vitamins, etc.) and contact the office.

Good thing is you will be seeing the nurse in a day or so and she will be able to physically examine it. Once you call them, and you describe what you are experiencing, they will be able to give you a better idea.

In the mean time, I would wear loose clothing, no tampons and thongs or anything that could be rubbing against the area.

Please keep us posted and let us know how you are doing. Best wishes!

Hi there. So thankful I found this site to ask questions!
I just had a revision (3/1) of the labiaplasty I had done in November. After I was all healed the left side was longer than the right a noticeable amount so my plastic surgeon did a free revision of that side. I had the wedge method and he did the wedge method under local this time for the revision. Yesterday the swelling got a little worse as well as the pain and I called and they told me to come in today. I saw the doctor and he said that there was a slight separation but not all the stitches came undone. I asked him if this was going to cause a deformity when I was all healed up (because i got the revision for a reason, this a huge fear of mine) and he said he doesn't think so because not all the stitches came out just some and that it should heal up nicely (can I believe that? I'm worried he's saying that just to make me feel better.). My biggest concern is that I am getting married in two months from today and my fear is that I won't be healed by then or if it does heal it will look bad. He told me the revision was going to beminor compared to last time and I would heal up quick and I didn't want to have to have it revised after I was married so I figured I'd go ahead and do it, now I'm worried I made a bad decision smilies/sad.gif. Does the stiches coming undone cause delayed healing?? I am stressed about all of this and am trying not too think about it too much.. Thanks.

Hi Liz,

Thanks for your comment and glad the site has been helpful!

Sounds like your doctor has been straightforward with you up to this point and even performed a "free" touch-up to correct the asymmetry, scheduled you in for a follow up once you noticed the slight separation. All positive signs.

With that said, it is hard to tell exactly how you will heal. If your doctor is experienced, he is basing his response on what he has seen and hopefully his firsthand knowledge (from his wedge labiaplasty patients).

Do not stress yourself out (I know easier said than done), but at this point you have done a lot of things right. Contacted your doc, been seen, etc. Usually a revision (depending on extent) does have a faster healing period...

Nevertheless, do you know what caused the "swelling to get worse" or how the sutures may have separated this time around? Where exactly did they come undone?

Let me know and that may help us both. smilies/wink.gif

Hear from you soon,

Vanessa

Hi Vanessa, thanks for the answer. They came undone right where he cut the wedge. and now i can see the separation (I didn't notice it before looking down but I just looked with mirror), It looks like a V on the side (about a little more than half through the wedge he cut) and I am SO scared right now that it will not come together and will heal like that and look deformed, worse off than before it was just uneven. I'm worried that the edges of the V (where the separation occurred) will heal separate from each other. The swelling is going down a bit but earlier I had hope that it would come together and now I'm feeling like how would it and how would you the doctor even fix that if it did heal like I'm fearing it will? Sorry for rambling I am just extremely worried right now smilies/sad.gif. Thanks a lot. P.s Should he put stitches in it again or is it too late?

Hey Liz, How are you?

Have you gone in for your post-op? At this point most doctors will not restitch or cauterize (unless there is drastic blood loss). Most prefer to wait and let it heal on its own.

Let me know how you're doing.

Hi i really hope you can help me as im panicking quite a bit!! I had my labia reduction surgery 8 days ago and everything was going well up till day 4 when i noticed on the right side where the labia joins to the top bit that there was some bleeding and the stitches (dissolvable) looked bloody which stick out of the skin. When i walk it feels like it is rubbing on that bit as though iv split it and it wont heal! Its not bleeding much there but today when i looked in the mirror i notice a line running down each labia in between the stitches which wasnt visible before, it looks like blood is trying to get through like its starting to split! I dont see the surgeon for a check up until two days but im worried its going to split open more! Im only getting a spot of blood so far, i have been doing everything by the book i shower twice a day and put an antiseptic gel on (given by surgeon) and i wash each time i go toilet. Should i not use the gel and keep the area dry instead?

Hi Zoe,

Thanks for your question. It is typical for the bruising and swelling to get more noticeable at 3-4 days post-op. It is difficult to tell what exactly is going on based on your description and without a physical assessment.

Were you provided post-op instructions? Have you spoken with your doc to explain what you are seeing? As long as you are not lifting anything heavy, moving too much or wearing clothing that would rub on it (following the post-op instructions), then what you're seeing should be normal.

However, it would be best for you to reach out to your doc, just to make sure that all is okay (and give you peace of mind).

In the mean time, make sure you are avoiding baths, thongs, sitting for too long on hard surfaces, wear loose comfortable clothing and relax. Call your doc just to get reassurance. Fortunately you will be seeing him soon.

Hope this helps!

Hi,
IT has been ten days since my wedge labiaplasty, and I too, have a tear at the base of the v and the sore is dark colored inside and seems to be getting larger. It is very moist and has a strong fishy odor that it has not had until now. It is hard to keep it dry now because it becomes wet immediately after washing and drying with a hairdryer and smells right away. Is this an infection from the open wound? I have not used any bacterial spray or cream, as my Gyn did not have any instructions about doing so. the inside minora are now redder, too.

Also, the pads I bought have a plastic lining and I am wondering if it can't breathe enough. I cannot go without pads either. Do you know a good one? I think I might have torn the stitches when I drove to buy pads on the third day, and now I don't think it is a good idea to drive. No one has mentioned any problems from driving though.

Hi Deedee,

Thanks for your post. When was the last time you saw or reached out to your doctor? Does it appear to be getting worse?

Who did your surgery (a regular gyn or cosmetic trained)?

Why are you wearing pads? There are some cotton pads and carefree pantyliners (that are not plastic).

Hi i have a question. Labiaplasty surgury only tightens the vigina or it makes it look like
the one you were born with( meaning virgin vigina). Thank you
...
written by Vanessa Scott, April 02, 2012
Hi Jessica,

Though some women see an improvement in "friction" during intercourse after the labiaplasty, the surgery is primarily to reduce the size of the labia minora or majora (depending on the patient). It does affect the appearance or look of the vulva/vagina.

Hope that helps!

oh ok is that the only surgury for vigina. My friend lost her virginity and she wants a surgury that would stich it and make it look like virgin. Is there any surgury for that? thank you

Hi Jessica,

Not sure what you mean by a surgery that will make the vulva/vagina look like a virgin.

If you mean a procedure to restore the hymen if it has been broken, then that surgery is called a hymenoplasty.

Let me know if that answers your question.

Best,

Vanessa

Hi Vanessa, Following the birth of my baby in January, my left labia split away from the clitoral hood and tore downwards. I have just had it repaired (6 days ago) but have noticed that some of the stitches at the top near the clitoral hood have come apart. Should I now go back to the doctors or wait to see how it heals? I am concerned that the rest of the stitches will come undone. Also, my clitoris appears very swollen still, is this right? I imagine it may have been from excessive pressure being applied during surgery to stitch the lip back on but would appreciate some reassurance.

Any advice, greatly appreciated.

HI Mel,

Thank you for your questions.

Congrats on the baby & my apologies on the splitting of your labia (have heard this happen before).

What type of surgeon performed the labia repair?

You should definitely contact your doctor and let them know the stitches have split, just so he/she knows. They will more than likely not restitch because tissue has started to heal. But still a good idea.

Secondly, swelling is very common at this phase of healing. How much obviously will depend on you, your doctor and all that was done....

Have you been icing? How about staying off your feet or refraining from activity? Wearing comfortable clothing? Are you spotting? Has bleeding increased since sutures split?

Did you take any pics immediately after surgery? This may be helpful for you to compare and see how healing is coming along or if there is anything abnormal. Just an idea...

Anyway, let me know how you are doing.

Hi Vanessa,

Thanks for your response - I'm in the UK so a gynaecologist consultant did the initial repair at the birth and the same one did the repair last week. The initial repair was under local anaesthetic and he was definitely heavy handed so I'm not surprised that I'm as swollen on the clitoris if the first encounter was anything to go by!

I haven't noticed a particular increase in bleeding although there has been a little bit of spotting but I can see this is wear the split has happened and there is bit of raw skin. The rest of the stitches seem to be in place but unfortunately it is the part attaching the last bit of the lip back onto the clitoral hood that has come apart so at least it appears that the lip isn't hanging down as it was before!

Def wearing comfortable clothing such as leggings so that there isn't too much compression going on there but unfortunately with a new baby and a 4 year old, staying off my feet and not being as active hasn't been too possible. I will definitely go back to the doctors but you confirmed what I'd suspected which is that they wouldn't do anything at the moment as healing has already started, as they confirmed this previously after the inital stitching at birth.

thanks for the advice and I will definitely also do the icing!

Thanks for the update Mel,

Glad to hear that bleeding has not increased and that you will be seeing your doctor.

It is definitely advisable to avoid lifting anything heavier than 5-7 pounds right now (to avoid pressure or sutures splitting). Can imagine that is difficult with a new baby, but figured it would be helpful to state it in case your doctor had not informed you.

And keep in mind that the activity may worsen swelling so be aware of that too.

Please keep me posted and do not hesitate to contact me with other questions!

Best wishes,

Vanessa
