What Is Labiaplasty?

There seems to be an awful lot of confusion and controversy over just exactly what labiaplasty is.

On the one hand, feminist groups and otherwise well meaning (but misinformed) people have chosen to compare it to the barbaric practice of female genital mutilation.

But this is hardly the case.

One is an act of force on a defenseless child while the other is a choice made by thousands of healthy, educated women around the world each year.

And after talking to and working with hundreds of those women, I can tell you exactly what labiaplasty is.

It is a minimally invasive, reconstructive plastic surgery women choose in order to correct, reduce or trim the size of their labia.  It is often done in conjunction with a clitoral hood reduction.

And yes, some women do it only to enhance the appearance of their vagina.  Similar to a nose job or breast enhancement.

Yet for most women, a labia reduction can help with hygiene issues, painful intercourse, discomfort with clothing or women who simply feel self-conscious due to their abnormally excessive labial tissue.

People often say, "why not be happy with what you got?"

These people usually being, women or men that have no idea what is like to suffer from having large labia.

I have talked to a good number of women that have been so desperate and miserable they have attempted to cut their own labia!

My position is not that women should have a labiaplasty.  Not everyone will benefit.

However, for those that truly have problems with the size of their labia and have decided that it is the best option for them, my advice is to find a qualified doctor that can help you achieve your goals.

These days more and more doctors are offering these procedures.  So it is more important than ever to find an experienced and qualified doctor.

Find a doctor with experience, the right training and of course the one that understands your needs.  Not one that just took a weekend course last week.

Know there are risks.

Although, there is an aesthetic component to having a labiaplasty, the majority of the women I worked with are more concerned about the physical function and comfort of their labia.

Are You A Candidate?

Women are not only trimming or "snipping" their labia because they are vain and have seen one to many Playboy pictures.

Many of them are choosing to live more comfortable, healthy and happy lives.

At the end of the day, it's your body. Do what is right for you!

So take your time.

Find a competent doctor and avoid becoming a Labiaplasty gone wrong.

You will be so glad you did!
